Humble Bundle launches monthly indie game subscription

first_imgFinally, a subscription service to satisfy those gaming needs. Sure, there are a couple other monthly video game subscription services that send you retro games for old systems, or a mystery once-a-month title with the focus playing on nostalgia or maybe getting some little-known game more traction. Humble Bundle, the company known for promoting indie developers as much as they help some favorite charities, is getting into the monthly box mix.Of course, by box, they mean Steam. While you may not get the satisfaction of physically ripping into and unboxing your Humble Monthly Bundle, you will get some pretty rad games, according to Humble Bundle anyways. For $12.00 per month, you’ll get a selection of “recent hits to hidden gems to timeless classics” delivered to your virtual doorstep. The games will be redeemed through Steam Keys or straight DRM-free versions of the game. They don’t specifically state how many games you’ll get each month, but the plan is to have the games loosely based around a central theme. Humble Bundle says they want to feature games that haven’t been in previous bundles, and also hopes to get ore developers into the mix, promising it’ll be easier to track revenue with this subscriber model, versus their usual pay what you can model. In true Humble Bundle nature, 5% from each month’s proceeds will go to support one of their favored charities. It’s not surprising to see game companies get in on this popular subscription trend. Unboxings have become a staple of YouTuber content, and fans really do love all the “leftovers” that come in their blind monthly boxes. On a personal note, I feel this will lead to less clutter on the shelves and hopefully more engagement from gamers and developers alike to get games into the hands of those who enjoy them, but not always sure where to find them. Ever since Sploot released, I’ve been on an indie kick and have been sourcing social media for suggestions for more weird and fun games to play, so something like this is right up my alley. The cutoff date for the first subscription is November 6, and by signing up Humble Bundle will give you a copy of Grimlock II to start playing right away. To sign up and learn more about it, head on over to Humble Bundle’s site.last_img read more
