first_imgSeveral residential areas as well as market buildings and churches were destroyed on Friday night in the New Israel Community, near Logan Town in Johnsonville, outside Monrovia. The violent storm was accompanied by a heavy down pour that also affected properties in Kpeh-Kpeh Town, Lorma Quarter, Whein Town, and the Nezoe Community. In the New Israel Community alone, the Community chairpersons T. Emmanuel Cole, and William Menwon, tallied the destruction of at least 16 private homes as well as business centers including the New Israel Market and the Church of Christ respectively. The New Israel Community Market is situated on one acre of land donated by Hali Banapa and his wife Kebbeh and mud structured with the help of F. Supui Koweh and wife Luopu, who is also the chief superintendent of the market.Due to the level of the destruction caused by the storm, many of the marketers did not sell on Saturday, but chose to mend their damaged market stalls. In the aftermath of the storm, the market spokesperson, Orether Medin, affectionately called “journalist” by her colleagues, appealed to humanitarian organizations including the Liberia National Red Cross Society, to come to the aid of the marketers to construct a concrete structure to contain other facilities such as a toilet and playground. The playground, according to Madam Mendin, when constructed, will be used by the marketers to keep their children busy while their parents attend to their goods. Also affected was Jesco Gonyon, whose three bedroom house was razed to the ground by the storm. He too, is seeking for help even from some of the “outstanding” community members to reconstruct his damaged building.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img
