Liverpool boss Rodgers hails Gerrard’s ‘big’ character

first_imgLiverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes Steven Gerrard will show his ‘big character’ when the Reds host Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday. The 34-year-old’s costly slip in last season’s pivotal title clash against the Blues set in motion a poor run of form for Rodgers’ men, who ultimately fell short of a maiden Premier League title behind Manchester City. But Rodgers claims he has witnessed his captain’s ability to bounce back from hard moments before and expects him to be ready for the clash on Saturday, despite sitting on the bench during Liverpool’s 1-0 Champions League defeat against Real Madrid on Tuesday.Speaking on Gerrard’s slip against Chelsea, the manager said: “He has had hard moments in his career and he always responds magnificently – there was no blame.“He was instrumental in our run last year and how well we played and he is a big character and bounces back from that.”Rodgers also dismissed criticism of his team selection at the Bernabeu, instead arguing more praise should be aimed at his squad. He added: “I know there has been a bit of criticism for the selection but I think it is a disservice to the team that played.“I don’t look so much into it because any criticism that comes is part of what you take as a manager, but I didn’t think it was fair to call Kolo Toure, Lucas Leiva or Adam Lallana a reserve player.” 1 Steven Gerrard in action for Liverpool last_img
