Twothirds believe choosing their working hours would boost productivity

first_imgAlmost two-thirds (65%) of employees who do not currently have access to flexible working arrangements feel they would be more motivated and productive if they could choose their own hours, according to research by co-working organisation The Brew by rent24.The survey of 1,000 professionals also found that 65% believe that choosing their own working hours would help them achieve a better work-life balance. A further 60% felt that this would enable them to work during the times of day when they had the most energy and concentration, rising to 68% of those aged between 18 and 34.More than a quarter (27%) of respondents felt that flexibility would empower staff to better manage their mental health in order to improve motivation and productivity, while 30% stated that it would make them feel more trusted and appreciated. An additional 26% noted that flexible working hours would enable them to more easily manage responsibilities outside of work, such as childcare or dog walking, ensuring that these do not become distractions.More than half (53%) of overall respondents, and 72% of those aged between 18 and 24, agreed that flexible hours would help them get a better night’s sleep or be less tired at work.Only 18% of professionals at small and medium-sized businesses already have access to flexible working arrangements, compared to 14% of respondents aged between 18 and 34 years-old.Andrew Clough (pictured), chief executive officer at The Brew by rent24, said: “How people want to work is changing and our survey highlights that many employers are overlooking the benefits of flexible working, such as employee motivation and productivity.“Not only can it help create a better work-life balance and allow for increased feelings of being trusted and appreciated, but allowing employees to work when it suits their needs could also have a significant impact on their alertness and have important mental health and sleep benefits, which in turn yield a happier and better performing workforce.”last_img read more

first_imgAC Business Media (ACBM) announced yesterday that it has acquired Door Security + Safety Professionals (DHI) conNextions, an annual trade show and exposition serving the door security and safety industry.According to a statement, ACBM, a B2B organization serving the media and business intelligence industry, now owns and manages conNextions, while DHI will continue to offer conference programming services. Pentagon probes Trumps former national security advisor Flynn

first_imgLt Gen Michael Flynn, director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, testifying during a hearing before the House (Select) Intelligence Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. Photo: AFPThe Pentagon said Thursday it is investigating President Donald Trump’s former national security advisor Michael Flynn over payments he received from Russian government-linked firms. The Department of Defense said it was probing whether the retired lieutenant general failed to obtain required prior approval before accepting money from foreign governments.Flynn was specifically warned when he retired in 2014 that he had to get advance permission before accepting consulting fees, salaries, gifts, or travel expenses from a foreign government.Flynn, the former defense intelligence chief, was fired by the White House after 24 days as Trump’s top national security aide over his communications with Russia’s US ambassador, amid intense concern that Moscow had directed a concerted effort to interfere in last year’s presidential election. But the Pentagon investigation, launched in early April, appears focused on the more than $33,000 dollars Flynn earned to attend an RT television gala in December 2015, where he sat at a table with Russian President Vladimir Putin. It could also extend to the $530,000 Flynn was paid to lobby for Turkey during last year’s presidential election campaign.Such payments possibly violate Defense Department and US constitutional prohibitions on retired military personnel conducting activities involving foreign governments without advance clearance. Flynn ended a 33-year army career as director of the Defense Intelligence Agency during 2012-2014.The Flynn probe adds to a number of investigations in Congress and the Department of Justice relating to Russian interference in the 2016 election, which US intelligence says was designed to boost Trump’s prospects to win the presidency. The Pentagon confirmed its investigation after the House Oversight Committee released a 2014 letter the DIA sent to Flynn advising specifically that he needed advance permission from Congress before accepting any payments from foreign governments.Flynn’s lawyer has said Flynn briefed the DIA before and after his Russia trip. But on Thursday Elijah Cummings, the committee’s vice chair, said the DIA informed the committee that there is no evidence that Flynn requested approval to take the money from RT, which the US says is an arm of the Russian government.“We have no evidence, zilch,” that Flynn sought any approval to accept foreign payments, Cummings said.Cummings also lashed out at the White House for not providing any documentation on Flynn in response to the committee’s request.“I honestly do not understand why the White House is covering up for Michael Flynn … after the president fired him,” Cumming said.“It makes the American people think White House has something to hide,” he added.last_img read more

Razers Reinvented the Wheel And Itself

first_img Razer’s been around for quite some time, but they’ve always had this broad stigma attached to it. At least in many of the circles that I run with. There’s something of a snapback against products that are too… gamer-y. I mean think about it: gamers, and especially the products that are, rightly or not, tied to that identity are on the aggressive end. Think Mountain Dew: an EXTREME DRINK for EXTREME GAMERS. It’s almost iridescent. As a whole, gaming accessories and products designed “for gamers” are gaudy and ostentatious. And I say this as someone who has spent… we’ll say a good chunk of change on geeky memorabilia. It’s just that as I’ve grown when I invite friends and colleagues over for a movie or a board game night, I don’t need a dozen different accessories that glow in all the colors of the rainbow. I appreciate subtlety. For better or worse, Razer’s been on the wrong end of that for quite a while. Many of their early products were over-built and obnoxious. Sharp industrial angles would have them feel at home in a neon-coated cyberpunk dystopia, but not in my home. But starting this past year, I’ve noticed my tune shifting a bit. The company and its products have found a place in the more relaxed stages of my adulthood. And that’s a weird thing to say about the company that’s currently working on a monstrous gaming laptop that sports three 4K screens dubbed “Project Valerie.”What’s made the difference for me, I’ve noticed is that as Razer has grown, so to has its eye for industrial design. For the most part, one high-end mechanical keyboard is the same as any other. And in my own testing, I’ve found that unless you’re using a really low-end mouse, you won’t be able to detect any substantive difference between a Razer Deathadder and a Logitech G502. But where the latter seems to have doubled down on the gamer aesthetic, with harsh lines and sharper edges (a clear evolution from their older, more balanced product lines), Razer has, for most of its devices, gone in the opposite direction. There are a few outliers, Razer’s Ouroboros Mouse, for example, looks like it might slice my hand. But the majority of their product lines have grown up. I recall the 2013 edition of the BlackWidow, Razer’s premier mechanical keyboard. Its keys were recessed into the base of the board, meaning that it could be difficult to clean. And while the keys were backlit, they came in one color: radioactive green. The chassis was also a soft plastic-y material that was prone to showing scratches and grime. Since then, Razer’s updated the line, pulling the keys out so that they sit above an all-aluminum base. The effect is subtle but beautiful. Against my black glass desk, the gently rotating color palette of the LED lighting is almost serene. Add to that the immediate presence that a hefty metal base commands and Razer’s recent offerings would feel just as welcome in an office as they would at an all-night LAN.It might not mean much to some, but that flexibility matters to me. I don’t want my devices and accessories to just the best “gaming” thing I can get. I want them to the best thing I can reasonably afford. And there’s a solid case to be made for almost every one of Razer’s products these days.As I said, the latest BlackWidow keyboards are a delight to look at, but they offer some genuine quality of life improvements, too. If you’re not using a mechanical keyboard and you work on the computer for most of the day, you owe it to yourself to invest in a mechanical keyboard. They’re much easier on the hands in the long run, and they offer a more direct, tactile sensation to typing, boosting accuracy for most. Razer’s DeathAdder mouse is just as sophisticated. It works well as an all-purpose tool, great for everyone from web developers to video editors. From my read, Razer’s picked up on the idea that while pretty much 100% of their customer base plays games, not all of them are gaming all the time. People have a life outside of games, and Razer’s been moving to be the brand that gamers take with them when they step away from the screen. The Nabu fitness tracker/smartwatch, while underwhelming, is a testament to this new philosophy. You can see this shift most clearly, though, in Razer’s laptops.Where the company was once ridiculed for the insane, overbuilt Razer SwitchBlade, they’ve since launched smaller, more utilitarian companions. The Blade and the Blade Stealth are now capable machines selling for reasonable prices. Both are light, portable powerhouses that often compare favorably with similar offerings from other companies like Dell. But these machines are built to last. All-aluminum chassis and stellar attention to detail give the Blade and its little cousin, the Stealth, an air of prestige to them. They aren’t just portable gaming machines; they’re powerful tools of business that can also game.I never thought I’d let go of my Logitech G710+. I never thought I’d replace my (super old) Logitech G7 either. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a casual fan of Razer’s more ridiculous tech (like the aforementioned triple-screened laptop), but I didn’t think I’d genuinely appreciate Razer’s approach to design and construction as much as I do now. Which isn’t to say that everything the company designs is golden. But that its products are continually evolving and growing and for the first time I can say they’re a good fit for me. Remove the 3D Objects folder from This PC in Windows 10

first_imgRemove the 3D Objects folder from This PC in Windows 10 by Martin Brinkmann on October 20, 2017 in Windows – 26 commentsMicrosoft’s Creators Update pushed 3D applications to the operating system, and the follow up update Fall Creators Update seems to have pushed even more 3D related content. While this may appeal to some users, I cannot see this as being a feature that is attractive to most desktop PC users. If you open File Explorer on Windows 10 after the installation of the Fall Creators Update, or new installation of that version, you will notice a new 3D Objects entry when you open This PC in Explorer. The folder is the first that is displayed under folders; as the sorting order is alphabetically. It is empty by default, but its name hints at it being the default storage location for 3D objects on the device similarly to how the Documents folder is the default storage location for documents. The folder takes up space, and if you don’t make use of it, you may want to remove it so that more important folders are displayed higher up in the folder hierarchy.Tip: Check out the 8 things to do after installation of  a Windows 10 feature update.Remove the 3D Objects folder from This PC in Windows 10It is unfortunately not as easy as selecting the folder and hitting the Delete-key on the keyboard to remove it from This PC. It is equally impossible to remove all 3D related applications that get installed with the Windows 10 operating system to remove the 3D Objects folder.Note: The following method requires that you edit the Registry. I suggest you create a backup of the Registry, or create a System Restore point before you proceed so that you can restore the previous state if something goes wrong. The guys over on Ask VG found a way to remove the 3D Objects folder using the Windows Registry. Here is what you need to do:Use the Windows-R key to open the run box on the Windows 10 machine.Type regedit.exe, and hit the Enter-key. This loads the Windows Registry editor.Confirm the UAC prompt that Windows displays when you launch the Registry Editor.Visit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace by pasting the address into the address field.Locate {0DB7E03F-FC29-4DC6-9020-FF41B59E513A}.Right-click on the entry, and select delete.Visit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MyComputer\NameSpace.Locate {0DB7E03F-FC29-4DC6-9020-FF41B59E513A}.Right-click on the entry, and select delete. This removes the 3D Objects entry from This PC in File Explorer directly. A restart of the computer or other operations are not required. You can download this archive which contains Registry scripts to add or remove the 3D Objects folder from This PC.  3d-objects-this-pc-windows-10.zipSummaryArticle NameRemove the 3D Objects folder from This PC in Windows 10DescriptionThe guide explains how you can delete the 3D Objects folder in File Explorer’s This PC listing on machines running the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

Philippine volcano ejects ash but no violent eruption

first_img Four benefits of having a wireless security system Ex-FBI agent details raid on Phoenix body donation facility The agency asked local officials to keep people away from a 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) hazardous zone around the crater, he said. He said aircraft should not fly close to the mountain to avoid any sudden explosions and ash clouds.Solidum said the explosion was due to ground water coming into contact with hot rocks and not rising magma. He says such “phreatic” explosions are typical of Bulusan. The ash explosion lasted about 3-1/2 minutes, shorter than the 5-minute explosion recorded May 1.A large explosion in February 2011 that shot an ash plume about 2 kilometers (more than a mile) into the sky prompted about 1,200 villagers to flee to shelters.Bulusan is one 23 volcanoes considered active by the volcanology agency, but it has not had a violent eruption since in 1918.The country is in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where volcanic activity and earthquakes are common.
