Ben & Jerry’s lifts the lid on April Fool’s Day cloning stunt

first_imgToday, Ben & Jerry’s lifted the lid on an April Fool’s Day event aimed at raising consumer awareness of the government’s recent approval of cloned milk and meat within the human food supply chain. In late-March Ben & Jerry’s went undercover through the launch of Cyclone Dairy, a fictitious dairy company marketing milk made from 100% cloned cows, to gauge consumer reaction surrounding this issue. The make-believe company was launched via the Web site CycloneDairy.com and street sampling initiatives in Manhattan, with support from the Center for Food Safety, a nonprofit public interest organization based in Washington, D.C.”April Fools! Ben & Jerry’s is just kidding about Cyclone Dairy but we’re serious about the need for a system to track cloned animals,” said Walt Freese, Chief Euphoria Officer for Ben & Jerry’s. “Americans should have the basic right to choose the foods they want to eat.”In January 2008, the U.S Food and Drug Administration declared milk and meat from cloned animals safe for human consumption, enabling cloned food products to enter the U.S. food supply. However, many Americans are not aware of this fact and are uncomfortable with the idea of eating cloned food products. In fact, a 2008 national poll conducted by the Food Marketing Institute revealed that more than three-quarters of Americans are not comfortable with eating foods from cloned animals.”Ben & Jerry’s believes that we need a national clone tracking system so companies and consumers can avoid eating cloned foods if they so choose,” said Freese. “Ben & Jerry’s staged this event in the spirit of raising public awareness, defending consumer choice, working toward better policies on cloned animals and highlighting that the awful truth is that this kind of dairy company could open for business today.”Ben & Jerry’s has been an outspoken advocate for cautious national policies on cloned animals for years, including a march of activists dressed as cloned cows on Capitol Hill in March of 2007. If you are concerned about this issue and would like to avoid eating cloned animals, please visit BenJerry.com for more information on how you can be an advocate for a cloned animal tracking system.About Ben & Jerry’sBen & Jerry’s produces a wide variety of super-premium ice cream and ice cream novelties, using high-quality ingredients including milk and cream from family farmers who do not treat their cows with the synthetic hormone rBGH. Study: Clean energy shift promises global growth

first_imgStudy: Clean energy shift promises global growth FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Reuters:Strong action to combat climate change could cumulatively add at least $26 trillion to the world economy by 2030, according to a study on Wednesday which seeks to dispel fears that a shift from fossil fuels will undermine growth.President Donald Trump, for instance, said last year that he will pull the United States out of a global climate pact called the Paris Agreement because it would impose what he called “draconian financial and economic burdens” on his country.By contrast, the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, which includes former heads of government, business leaders and economists, said there was “unprecedented momentum” toward greener growth that would boost jobs and countries’ economies. Bold climate action could deliver at least $26 trillion in net cumulative benefits from now until 2030 compared with business as usual, it said.“There’s still a perception that moving toward a low-carbon path would be costly,” lead author Helen Mountford told Reuters. “What we are trying to do with this report is once and for all put the nails in the coffin on that idea.”A shift from fossil fuels to cleaner energies such as wind and solar power would avoid 700,000 premature deaths from air pollution in 2030, it added. The report recommended high prices on carbon dioxide emissions of $40-$80 per tonne by 2020 in major economies.More: Greener growth could add $26 trillion to world economy by 2030: studylast_img read more

In addition to the price freeze, Manchester United said they would expand dedicated areas for vocal fans in the Stretford End at Old Trafford to increase decibel levels. They will also trial rail seating, subject to approval from local authorities. The club said: “We’ve worked closely with fan groups and through the Fans’ Forum to help achieve this shared goal of reviving the Stretford End to its traditional status as the heartbeat of our match day. “We have also submitted a proposal to the local authority to trial a rail seating area within the stadium. “Our belief is that the introduction of rail seating would enhance spectator safety in areas of the stadium where, as with other clubs, we have seen examples of persistent standing.” The 20-times English champions said more than 100,000 people were on the waiting list for season tickets. Podolski makes Inter loan move

first_imgArsenal have confirmed German forward Lukas Podolski has completed a loan move to Inter Milan for the remainder of the 2014/15 season. The 29-year-old, who joined the Gunners from Cologne in the summer of 2012, had become frustrated by a lack of first-team opportunities, often used as an impact player from the bench by manager Arsene Wenger. He has scored three goals this season – including a dramatic last-gasp winner in the Champions League group game at Anderlecht. Podolski, who was part of the World Cup winning squad in Brazil during the summer, has already linked up with Roberto Mancini’s Serie A side and trained in Milan on Monday. “He is experienced and has a wonderful career behind him,” Mancini, the former Manchester City boss, said at a press conference. “He will help us and is not at the end of his career.” center_img Press Associationlast_img read more
